An Author’s Triumph

There is nothing braver, which I can imagine to do,

than to set ones book onto the world.

For inside that book, is so much of yourself.

Your triumphs, your pain, your childhood, your feelings,

your friends, your sadness, your love, your longings,

and above all, your spirit.

Complete strangers, who would otherwise

have never crossed your path

will read it, and comment.

Comments not on the book, but on you.

And what may matter more to you,

is that the people around,

your family, and friends who you grew up with,

will also read it.

And it may feel to you that they have found out

a secret about you, that you wanted to keep hidden.

Yet you cannot possibly know how

every individual will interpret your work.

It may bring joy to some people,

humour to others, and relaxation to others.

It may have a far deeper impact

on other people’s lives than you ever imagined.

What if they can relate?

What if their pain reflects your hidden pain?

What if, by reading you, these people learn your secrets?

And you will change, your feelings, your friends,

your life; the way it were before the book,

will be so, no longer.

Maybe people will feel betrayed?

Envious?

Maybe they will not understand.

And so, with your hard-earned book out onto the world,

you must change.

You find yourself socially isolated.

And experience pains that hit a whole new level.

Was it worth it?

Yes is my answer.

I think of all the books which have inspired me.

Authors whom I came to love.

If my book has changed the life of, or inspired

a single person, then it is all worthwhile.

Yet dare I channel

the aftermath of ‘_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _’

into another book?

I think so…

I hope so.
