BrokenWingedFaery
I've been coming accross some wildly varying prices for top & bottom surgery, both ftm and mtf and was wondering what ya'll have heard as an average price. I know it'll depend on where you are and who you go to, as well as other factors, but does anyone want to give me a general idea?
Dako
I had a friend that went full mtf in about 1977 and he was talking $80K, but I understand new techniques are making it simpler. I suppose price is no object for those who want it.
robowarrior
The general idea is that if you love, support and believe in yourself you wouldn't care what others think about how you look.
Dako
RB, I think you may be missing the point. We're talking sexual reassignment surgery, not a tummy tuck.

shes2smart
The general idea is that if you love, support and believe in yourself you wouldn't care what others think about how you look. I suspect what the OP is talking about goes beyond just appearance/attractiveness. We're talking complete gender transformation, here. Hardly the same thing as a woman getting a boob job to make what she already has bigger. No idea on costs for that particular surgery, but surgery in general gets pricey pretty quick....and I don't think you can count on insurance to cover this type of surgery. Even if that was true , it wouldn't make what i said count any less. I only know that the operation to turn a vagina into a penis is a very dangerous procedure for a woman. I mean its not just costs we are talking here, there are health risks too.
CarnelianButterfly
I recently came accross a link to a site for the benefit of trans men that can't afford top surgery. link removed I'm not sure about the other costs involved, but I know most programs require commitment to the change involving hormone and psychological therapy that are not included in the cost of the surgery alone. There is also the time involved, I think most re-assignments take a couple years.
BrokenWingedFaery
RB: It is true and I'm aware of health risks. I simply want to know what the costs could be, not argue about personal opinions of surgeries of any kind. Particularly ones that are necessary for the happiness and mental well being of certain people. CarnelianButterfly: Thanks for the link and I've been reading up on this...according to most of what I've read, it's at least a year of therapy and hormones before your shrink will sign to allow any operations. miserableme
From some quick googling, gender reassignment surgery costs around $11,000 for the basic procedure. This escalates with all the extras. Not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, but if you must have it then I'm sure you'll find a way. good luck
BrokenWingedFaery
Thanks for the article Dako. miserableme: I think this is a matter of being very very very careful financially...
Dako
Some options removing hair roots from the face, restructuring the adam's apple, and cosmetic changes to body parts that look out of place. On trans woman I know has huge hands from working on cars all her life. Another has male pattern baldness, yet another fellow, Marty, looked pretty feminine before the change, and afterwards looked great. Like buying a car, it's the extras that add up. BrokenWingedFaery
Good point Dako...I know it's not cheap certainly, and there's lots of little things that need to be done. But if you're careful and smart and do things slowly, it should be ok...
UT
As the others said it's not really about the cosmetical thing. it's not about showing off their new thing or whatever. You must see that not anyone cannot get a sex reassignment surgery. First they must have the approval of a specialist in that area. (the enire procedure is quite complicated but if anyone is interested i have a 20 page essay on it, by professionals) You have to be diagnosed as transgendered which isn't lack of self esteem, but a birth defect. Even if that was true , it wouldn't make what i said count any less. I only know that the operation to turn a vagina into a penis is a very dangerous procedure for a woman. I mean its not just costs we are talking here, there are health risks too. it would make what you said count less because the motives have changed and that changes the entire ting. Just like crime. an action isn't ounishable unless you had a motive or were extremely careless. To turn a vagina to a penis can be risky. there's about a 5% risk of the operation going bad, but you see for people who have this problem there's no other way out. they need it. there was a documentary with a girl dressing as a man and try to live like a man, walk like one, everything. After about a year she couldn't take it any longer and she was practically going insane for everyday that went by. This was probably because of the stress of not being who you feel you are. everyone uses the wrong pronouns and such. when it comes to the cost I'd say, for a phalloplasty at least it is around 14000. But I think you can get it for free here in sweden or get the state to pay for a lot of it. Why? it's considered an illness and it's treated like any other illness. people have the right to be healthy and feel good and that's one of the things that I love most about Sweden. [Edited to change a can to cannot. the can gave to opposite idea]
