Not to dismiss your concerns, but the only part of this I found to be "weird" is your need to ask our opinions, which appears as having doubts on your end.

At any rate, I would bury this idea, rather than roll the dice...so to speak.

The perfect way to approach this, assuming that you really don't have some type of crush, is to wait until you're having a party or going to a party that is open to bringing friends.  Then reach out.  There won't be the awkward weight of "I've been missing you since our last contact 6+ months ago."  It will be way more casual and easy for him to accept or decline.

Ok. Try to accept that he moved on with his life after leaving the company. He hasn't reached out in half a year, so yes it would be awkward. And certainly his GF doesn't want other women asking him out on dates. 

Why not join some groups and clubs, volunteer, get a fun part-time job, get involved in sports and fitness. Broaden your social horizons and make new friends. 

Try to focus on why you feel lonely in your relationship. But do try to make new friends.
