Friday's Tears

A late day in early November

An early evening game

The air is growing colder

But, nothing stays the same

He's looking ahead

She's lost in 'behind'

He's trying to hold her

Thoughts are racing through her mind

She looks away

He holds her near

Quietly they're holding on

Silently dying here

If she had tears left

They'd be pouring down like rain

But she doesn't have to cry

For him to see her pain

He can feel her slipping from his grasp

He holds on tighter

But 'together' will never last

And they know it.

As she looks into his eyes

She sees the tears she couldn't cry

As she touches his cheek

She feels her knees are growing weak

She asks why

But she already knows

Her insides are trembling

As she firmly pulls him close

Two broken hearts

With the same muffled beat

Sweet sorrow in this comforting…

Prelude to defeat

Don't speak it out loud

Let's hide in this fantasy

Pretend we can be together

Trying just to breathe

He's what she needs

What he needs is her to hold on

But she's running out of apologies

For ev'rything she does wrong

She promises to stay

Whispering soft and sad

She should pull away

But they're all that they have

His face is hidden in her hair

He pulls her closer

But he's holding to despair

There's nothing there

And they know it.

(Author's note: Going back and reading this now...knowing how things would turn out all along still didn't make things any easier when the time came to face inevitability. This is one of those times I wish my personal life foreshadowing had been off the mark. But you really can't avoid the inevitable.)
