the happiest experience in my life..

.. was when I went camping this summer.

Seclusion in our forest, ‘twas a puzzle pieced world

The sea and the sky, two entities

Barely separated as darkness unfurled.

And the stars shone from above and below

Immense and winking through the heavens upon

The lake of melted snow.

It was summer then, though

When the night air was still warm

And the cool wood thoughtfully silent,

Still damp from the morning’s storm.

All the trees were but shadows

Cast in the glow of a receding fire,

And the mountains before us; silhouettes

A wall of rocky vignettes that let us keep our distance

From a reality that left much to desire.

The air was barely a whisper, accross our goose-fleshed skin

And the velvet water on that musky night, its touch beckoned us in.

Enfolding, like a blanket, in gentle laps that blessed the shore

Tilted my head back and my eyes were mirrors

Reflecting light unseen before.

For the vastness that enveloped, for the water that soothed

For the sky pressed into earth, although the mountains never moved.

There was only one place in the world that night,

One place to be alive

And when I took the deepest breath,

I knew I’d just arrived.
