One Day by David Nicholls is a blase novel filled with the lives of two unlikeable people. The woman does not gain her self esteem until 3/4 of the way through the book, and the man stumbles through a life of drunkenness and debauchy. Nowhere is there a touching love story. The pair finally get together in the last few chapters, get married in their late 30's... and then she dies less than a year later. "Then Emma Mayhew dies, and everything she thought or felt vanishes and is gone forever." The last few chapters of the book are about the widower spinning out of control yet again and then he hooks up with his manager. The end. WORST BOOK EVER. #1 international bestseller apparently.
