Magic_star829
Hi, I want to transfer to UBC (Another University in a different province), and I'm just wondering if a couple of bad marks will get me rejected. I am first year, so far I have 3 A's (2 from .05 credits and 1 from a full 1.0 credit) I have 1 A+ (.05 credit) and one A- (from 1.0 full credit). Here is the bad part, I didn't study as hard on my last two exams and ended up with a C+ (5. credit) on one course and am waiting for one last mark before I send my transcript to UBC which I think will be a B (not sure + or _). Do you think my chances of getting in (transfering) are still good despite the C and B? Waiting has to be the worst part in all of this!
rocio
Which program are you transferring into? You're undergrad, right? If you're transferring into an honors or specialisation or graduate program, it might be harder. But for a regular B.A. I don't think there's any way 1 C is going to mess you up. Was the C in an elective course or was it in a course that was important for your major? That will make a big difference as well.
Magic_star829
Yes I am undergrad, and am only transferring into the same Arts Major in Psychology program. My C+ was for an elective science credit.
rocio
UBC is a good school but you sound worthy. Don't sweat it.
ghost69
oh that's like transferring out of state here. they accept just about anybody cause they get you for all those out of town fees. it's lame.
rocio
Magic, wouldn't you pay the same fees as B.C. residents? From what I know, it's only Quebec that charges more to non-residents. Or has it changed?
Magic_star829
Well Actually the tuition is the same for transferring from Ontario to BC, it's not the same as if I were to go to a different country, in which case I'd have to pay a lot more. Magic_star829
Yeah exactly, under_my_amberella, the fees are the same as I pay here in Ontario.
kuiks8
It should say on their website what their expectations are for transfer students.

RayKay
They don't consider C's "bad marks" (they are not great, but they are the average) - and they definitely do not consider a B a bad mark (it's "above average") - particularly not for transferring in an undergrad rather than being accepted - it's not like you are trying to get into competitive grad school (even then a couple C's often are not such a big deal as long as GPA is high). If everyone had to get straight A's in everything, most people would never be able to transfer anywhere in undergrad or grad...and that's just not the case! Lots of people for example will get accepted in a law school up here in Canada they did not want to go to rather than the one they wanted, but once they have a year in, they transfer to the one they wanted as schools tend to see it as "well you are already in so have proven yourself enough to transfer". Magic_star829
Thanks everyone for you replies I feel a bit better now. My fingers are crossed and I hope I get in! I lived in Vancouver for 3 years, then came back here and I totally regret it! I can't wait to go back "home" where I belong! Anyway, Kuiks8 I'm actually going to be flying down (though with the crazy price of flying it might be cheaper to drive) I can take a cruise or fly to China for cheaper than it costs to fly from Ottawa to Vancouver. Anyway, I'm getting someone to fly down with me so I can take more stuff, and fill the maximum suitcase allowance, as well as take my two cats back with me. Magic_star829
Yeah the airfare in General to fly within Canada is deplorable!
thejigsup
Undergrad programs are most generally not as selective as Grad programs. In either case, your grades are fine. You should feel proud.
