A trinket

I've been feeling remorseful lately... Let me know what you think.

I stagger half asleep

Only half aware as I drag my feet

To the place where shore and ocean meet

And I wonder as the sea gulls call

Whether I will stand or fall

And why I had to make this all

So hard

 

They say that only time will tell

When the land will fall and the sea will swell

But I see the waves and I remember well

How the stars shine so long and bright

Familiar and every night

Under them I think I might

See you

 

I lost the necklace that you gave me

With the silver chain and soft engraving

But the only thing there worth saving

Was the memory

But the trinket couldn’t take that from me

When I threw it to the sea

 

I can’t say that I know why

I was drawn to the ever receding sky

I’m afraid it’s ‘cause I didn’t try

When I think back to last we spoke

I shudder and I start to choke

Though now I know something broke

I didn’t then
