Mindfulness is the practice of focusing on one’s inner spiritual state and being aware of the present moment. The concept of mindfulness has become increasingly popular in recent years, as it has been proven to help with physical and emotional wellbeing, relationships, career, and more. In order to practice mindfulness, one must let go of things beyond their control and focus on being present in the now.
The most important step to being mindful is realizing that all of our stress and troubles do not come from our current situation. Life can be complicated and often times, seemingly impossible to handle. Too often, people get lost in their heads and begin thinking about everything that has gone wrong and could possibly go wrong. This kind of cyclical thinking prevents us from seeing the good that life has to offer. When we are able to take a step back and look at our current situation from a different perspective, we are better equipped to let go of things that we feel attached to or have a hard time letting go of.
The key to mindfulness is being in the moment and understanding that each moment comes with its own unique experience. We can learn to let go of past traumas, hurts and disappointments that weigh on our minds. When we understand that these things are out of our control and that we must let them go if we are to have peace of mind, we can choose to focus on finding new moments of joy and contentment in our lives.
When we start to be mindful, we become more familiar with our emotional state and how we’re feeling. We are able to sit with ourselves in moments of discomfort, frustration and anger, without judging ourselves or getting stuck in negative thought patterns. We can better identify when our thoughts may be leading to harmful behavior or emotional states, and we can then shift our attention away from those unhelpful thoughts and concentrate on being in the present moment.
One step to staying present and mindful is by taking part in activities that involve focusing on the senses and the body. Activities such as yoga, meditation and tai chi help practitioners to stay in the moment and connect to their surroundings and themselves. Participating in activities like these helps individuals to truly know themselves and be aware of their emotional state. This increases one’s ability to recognize when their thoughts may be hindering their emotional wellbeing, or causing discontent. Once individuals can recognize when this is happening, they can make a conscious choice to re-direct their thoughts in healthier directions.
Practicing mindfulness can involve various things; from physical activity such as yoga, to psychological activities like journaling and self-reflection, to spiritual practices like prayer or mantra recitation. Each individual must find what works for them and be willing to put in the effort necessary to be mindful and stay present in their daily lives. There is no right or wrong way to cultivate mindfulness, it is dependent on what works best for each person.
Mindfulness is the practice of looking inward, finding strength and peace in the present moment, and being aware of and letting go of things that are out of one’s control. It helps individuals to accept and embrace life’s uncertainties, be compassionate toward themselves and others and simply enjoy the beauty of life.
