Sometimes we get stuck in a cycle of wishing and hoping things would be different, but not knowing how to take that essential first step to change. We consider the idea of changing our circumstances, but find ourselves too scared to confront the unknown and to make the difficult decisions that follow such change. Whether it’s seeking a new job, asking your partner to move in, or even seeking help for a mental health issue – when it comes to making huge life changes, we’re all afraid to take that leap of faith.
But you have to think about it – what’s the alternative? Staying in place and not doing anything? Is that an option? You can’t expect someone or something else to change. It’s up to you to first recognize the need for a change, and then to start taking action.
The first step is to do what’s in your power. Take a look at the situation and try to come up with a plausible solution. Oftentimes this will have you adjust your expectations to what’s realistically achievable rather than aiming too high and setting yourself up for failure. If you’ve been dealing with a stagnant relationship, for example, ask yourself if further investment will make sense. Start there and it will give you the green light to keep on trying or sometimes even let go altogether.
Dare to put a plan into action, since that’s the best way to get through the fear of what the future might hold. It can be daunting, considering that you don’t always have full control of the outcome, but know that you’re doing your best by trying. And don’t forget, sometimes failure isn’t so bad either – it gives you the opportunity to make adjustments, seek help, and learn how to do things differently over time.
As you start putting your plan into motion, though, each step might bring a wave of fear. Don’t let it paralyze you. Invest in strategies that will empower you and make you feel like you’re managing your fear and anxiety in the moment, rather than letting them control you. If you’re dealing with a particularly nerve-wracking task, practice mindfulness to destress and boost your confidence.
Finally, remember to take care of yourself and to stay positive about the future. As you take inspired action and commit to the process of change, know that you’ll gain clarity from different points of view and gain wisdom from making wise decisions. Life will sometimes bring joy —along with heartache. But as long as you accept that change is inevitable, you’ll find yourself equipped with the strategies for managing any curveballs life throws.
We may often feel stuck in our current situation when it comes to making big life changes. But, when it comes down to it, the only real thing standing in our way is often our own fear of the future. If you dare to confront it and put in the hard work to achieve your goals, there’s no telling what’s in store for you.
