No matter how hard some people may try, they can't seem to stop themselves from running behind schedule. Being late is a tendency that plagues many, and while it may initially seem like a minor inconvenience, it can have serious implications in certain environments. To get a better handle on the causes of tardiness, let's look at the three major factors that are known to contribute: time perception, time management and personality.
Time perception is a major contributing factor of tardiness. This entails how long an individual perceives an activity to take, compared to the actual amount of time it will require. In some cases, individuals see short tasks taking far longer than they actually do, leading them to run late for their next appointment. Conversely, some may underestimate the amount of time a task will take, leading them down a similarly tardy path. that sense of misjudged timing sets up the perfect storm for tardiness.
Time management is another major Contributor to being late. People's daily schedules are filled with a variety of tasks, from running errands to attending work-related events. Given the lack of hours in a day, it can sometimes be difficult to prioritize one task over another. Those who find themselves constantly running behind may be struggling with time management, or possibly the lack thereof. We're often pulled in multiple directions in the modern world, leaving our calendars filled with activities and commitments that all have deadlines attached. Without proper scheduling and goal setting, one can easily find themselves in a situation where they're constantly running behind.
Last, but certainly not least, personality can also play a role in tardiness. Individuals who tend to procrastinate or shy away from commitments and responsibility can often find themselves caught up in the tardy whirlpool. When our minds are bombarded with tasks, we can feel overwhelmed and uncertain of where to focus our energy in order to complete them. As such, we tend to procrastinate, thinking that if we wait long enough, additional time may appear unto us and resolve all of our issues.
Tardiness is unfortunately an impulse that many people cannot seem to shake. The three major factors that contribute to it are time perception, time management and personality—all of which demand conscious attention. By focusing on each factor, individuals can analyze their own habits and identify where adjustments must be made in order for them to reduce their level of tardiness. Through this process of introspection, learning and adjustment, all of us can hopefully step away from the dread cycle of tardiness!
