We often find ourselves surrounded by aspects of our lives that can cause feelings of stress, distress, and discomfort. Whether it be difficult relationships, a lack of fulfillment in our job, or an overall sense of dissatisfaction with ourselves, these elements can quickly become toxic. You may feel as if you're constantly in fight or flight mode, struggling to keep up with all the pressure and expectations placed upon you. It is only when you make the harsh decision to break away from these toxic elements, whether it be by ending a damaging relationship or leaving a soul-sucking job; that you can start on the path to finding mental and emotional stability.
Throughout your journey of escape, you experience a series of highs and lows; joyful moments where you feel liberated, followed by moments where you feel extremely vulnerable and exposed. Inevitably, as you step away from your old life into a new one; your nervous system switches from a state of fight or flight back into its natural parasympathetic state. This can lead to increased exhaustion, dizziness and disorientation as your body attempts to readjust back to its normal functioning status. It can be a daunting time for those who have been living under immense pressure for so long and the process can seem achingly long and arduous.
However, in order to give your mind and body adequate time to heal from the effects of toxic environments, it is important to allow yourself ample rest. Although it may not seem like it, as you will likely feel very keen to jump into a new career/relationship/lifestyle option straight away, giving your body enough rest is key to ensuring better physical and emotional health during this transition period. In addition, eating nutritious food and drinking plenty of water is essential in helping to replenish the vitamins and minerals that your body may be lacking due to all the stress and anxiety experienced while in the toxic environment. Utilizing positive coping mechanisms such as journaling, meditation and yoga are also helpful in aiding the healing process.
It is during periods like these that the power of self-care becomes especially important. While you may believe that your only obligation is to "do more", it is truly imperative that you allow yourself the time to do less. Refrain from falling into unhealthy practices of overworking yourself as this will only emphasise the negative emotions you wish to work through. Take some time out to focus on yourself, allowing yourself to indulge in activities that bring you peace or joy – whatever that may look like for you.
Breaking out of toxic environments requires strength and courage, but remember that what is placed in front of you does not define who you are. You are a powerful being capable of creating the life that brings meaning and contentment. By giving yourself proper self-care and loving reminders, you trust yourself through this transition and help your body enter back into its natural state of health and wellness. Once you find yourself out of the toxic environments and able to commit daily to positive self-care practices, watch your life slowly blossom into something beautiful before you!
